Renata Liwskahile I am originally from Warsaw, Poland, I now live in Calgary, Alberta with my illustrator husband, Mike.

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. My old school books overflow with sketches and the children’s book illustrations I create today are influenced by memories of my childhood. I also draw inspiration from the things I see around me.

I like to start my books in a sketchbook. Their portability and intimate size allow my creativity to flow. Working in a sketchbook also allows me a lot of freedom. With a sketchbook in hand I can look for just the right creative space in which to work (whether inside or outside of the studio!). I often seek a quiet place to draw—a place where the characters can do and be whatever my heart desires.

Nikolai the Only Bear by Barbara Joosse (Philomel) was my debut book. Little Panda (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) was my second picture book as an illustrator and first as an author. I fell in love with pandas by watching them on the internet on “pandacams”. With this book I wanted to share how wonderful and special pandas are to me. Little Panda received awards for illustration from the Society of Illustrators Original Art 2008 Children’s Exhibition, Communications Arts 2009 Illustration Annual, 3x3 Pro Show 2009 Illustration Annual, and the Applied Arts Magazine 2009 Illustration Award.

I also illustrated Skylar by Mary Cuffe-Perez (Philomel) and A Puppy is for Loving by Mary Labatt (Orca).  New York Times bestseller The Quiet Book by Deborah Underwood (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) was followed by its companion, The Loud Book, in Spring 2011 and this Christmas look for The Christmas Quiet Book. The Red Wagon, my second picture book as both author and illustrator, was published in 2011 by Philomel.
