Kate McMullenate McMullan has teamed up with her illustrator husband, James McMullan, to create a series of notable picture books. I Stink! (HarperCollins, 2002) a monologue by a garbage truck, won a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of 2002, a Horn Book Honor, and Bank Street's Irma S. & James H. Black Honor. Kate and Jim followed I Stink! with I'm Mighty!, a day in the life of a hard-working tugboat, I'm Dirty!, the adventures of a dirt-digging backhoe loader, I’m Bad!, the tale of a tantrum-throwing T. rex, I’m Big!, the story of one super-sized Sauropod, I'm Fast!, a high-speed chase between a race car and a fully-loaded freight train, I'm Brave!, featuring a tool-toting fire truck, and I'm Cool!, introducing the real star of every ice hockey game, the one-and-only Zamboni! A bright yellow school bus is the heroine of I'm Smart!, due out in the fall of 2017, and in the works is I'm Tough!, presenting a rough-and-ready pickup truck. Kate and Jim's vehicles inspired the animated series, The Stinky and Dirty Show, streaming on Amazon beginning September 2, 2016.

Kate's laugh-out-loud middle-grade fractured Greek-myth series, now published by Capstone, includes Have a Hot Time Hades!, Phone Home, Persephone!, Stop That Bull, Theseus!, Get to Work, Hercules!, and Hit the Road, Helen!, the story of the Trojan War, and Get Lost, Odysseus!

Kate is also the author of two series for beginning readers: Fluffy, the Classroom Guinea Pig and Pearl and Wagner

For early chapter-book readers, Kate has conjured up a zany world of medieval mayhem in the Dragon Slayers' Academy series. In SCHOOL! Adventures at Harvey N. Trouble Elementary, illustrated by New Yorker cartoonist, George Booth, Kate has created very punny students like Ron Faster, Izzy Normal, Gladys Friday, and Ivanna Snack. Also for this age is Kate's retelling of the classic tale of Pinocchio, illustrated in graphic style by Pascal Lemaitre and published in the fall of 2014.

After growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Kate taught sixth grade in inner-city Los Angeles and on an American Air Force base in Germany. To date she has more than one-hundred children's books to her credit. Kate and Jim McMullan live in New York City.
