eanne Steig is the author of several books of light verse and two books of prose, including: Consider the Lemming, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1988, a Parents' Choice Remarkable Book; The Old Testament Made Easy, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1990; Alpha Beta Chowder, HarperCollins, 1992; A Handful of Beans, Michael di Capua Books / HarperCollins, 1998, a New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book; A Gift from Zeus: Sixteen Favorite Myths, Joanna Cotler Books / HarperCollins, 2001, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, Smithsonian Magazine's Notable Book of the Year, and a New York Times Notable Book. They were all illustrated by her late husband, William Steig, with the exception of her newest release, Tales From Gizzard's Grill, which was illustrated by Sandy Turner and published by Joanna Cotler Books / HarperCollins in 2004. Her light verse has also been published in The New Yorker and in various literary magazines.

Steig is also a self-taught visual artist, working almost exclusively in street-finds and other discarded materials. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries over the past twenty-five years. Her most recent work, Fleas!, was released by Philomel Books / Penguin in fall 2008. She's currently working on a book of Bill's unpublished drawings called Cats and Dogs, which will be published by Harry N. Abrams.
